Principal/Associate Ecologist - Wallingford, Oxfordshire - £40-60k per annum

We are currently looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Principal/Associate Ecologist to join a friendly landscape architecture consultancy based in Wallingford, Oxfordshire.

The firm was established 20 years ago and has grown to around 20 full-time members of staff, including ecologists, landscape architects and specialised in arboriculture and built heritable.

The firm's broad range of expertise allows for a comprehensive approach to project work which adds value and interest through innovative and appropriate solutions. They have a national client base of both private and public sector clients, and their advice is sought at all stages of planning and design process for major development and environmental projects, as well as smaller scale schemes.

Their work involves protected species and habitat surveys, ecological assessments and EcIA, and design and implementation of mitigation schemes, habitat creation and management works. They also coordinate Environmental Statements, carry out landscape assessments and design, and provide arboricultural surveys and advice.

Interested applicants should demonstrate the following:

  • Education to at least BSc level in a relevant discipline
  • A true passion for wildlife and a good knowledge of British fauna and flora, with the ability to carry out and coordinate surveys for a wide range of habitats and species
  • Experience in the preparation of Ecological Impact Assessments and Habitat Regulations Assessments for a variety of schemes
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills
  • Experience in the design and implementation of cost and time efficient mitigation strategies
  • Experience in management of a diverse range of projects
  • Thorough knowledge of nature conservation legislation, best practice guidance and understanding of the UK planning system
  • A full driving licence and car ownership
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work well alongside clients and consultees
  • Ability to confidently advise clients and consultees on a wide range of ecological matters
  • Ability to deliver projects on time and on budget, maintaining the company's excellent quality of outputs with minimal supervision
  • Hold or qualify for fully membership of CIEEM
  • At least 5 years' experience within an ecological consultancy business, including time at a senior level

Ideally, the successful candidate will also:

  • Hold at least one licence to survey for European Protected Species (preferably bats and/or dormice) and have held a Natural England mitigation licence
  • Have experience of representing clients at planning appeals and public enquiries
  • A proven ability to win new clients and develop existing relationships would also be regarded as a distinct advantage
