Assistant Microbiologist

£17,500 per annum

Becoming an Assistant Microbiologist with FERA Science Ltd:

The post holder will support a mixture of research projects and service delivery within the Specialist Microbiological Services Team. Projects will involve handling Hazard Group 2 or 3 organisms, setting up experiments designed to study viruses and bacteria in food and/or environmental matrices, comparing detection methodologies (including molecular technologies), data collection, processing and reporting, preparation and testing of proficiency test materials and ad-hoc commercial analyses. There is the potential of developing containment level 3 handling skills in due course. All work will be conducted in accordance with ISO 9001 quality standards and to ISO 17025 where appropriate and to comply with Health and Safety rules. Training and active support and development will be provided as necessary for the post.

What you will do:

  • Support the production and testing of Microbiology Proficiency Test Materials for food and water schemes.
  • Assist with other traditional and molecular based projects within the team using a variety of methods for both commercial and research projects as required.
  • General maintenance of all laboratories including monitoring stock, quality control checks, record management (e.g. equipment and training files) to ensure adherence to required quality standards (e.g. ISO 9001 and ISO 17025).
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures, adhering to associated Risk Assessments and COSHH.
  • Assist with media preparation duties during peak periods.
  • Undertake microbiological analyses on a range of test sample types (including commercial), sometimes at short notice, and maintain a flexible approach to workload.
  • Willing to undertake the necessary training and clearances required for working at ACDP Biohazard level 3.
  • Support contingency response activities for Government and commercial customers involving microbiological examinations for hazard group 2 or 3 organisms if necessary.

Your experience will include:

  • Experience working in a laboratory using traditional and/or molecular microbiological methods (in a commercial or research laboratory or as part of a degree course).
  • Working to ISO9001, ISO17025, GLP or similar (desirable).
  • Experience of shelf-life testing and detection/enumeration of foodborne pathogens (desirable).
  • Working to strict delivery deadlines.
  • General microbiology and/or molecular skills/knowledge of Aseptic technique.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and Health and Safety documents and verbal instructions efficiently.
