Harper Adams University
Having just started my placement year as part of my degree at Harper Adams university, I have had the chance to reflect on the last two years of university and can safely say it is the best decision I have ever made.
Along with the course, university brings with it fantastic opportunities both in terms of social life and a chance to boost your life skills and meet great friends for life.
I would encourage anyone contemplating university to go for it.
Family is a topic rarely spoken about in the Young Farmer Focus however being away from home gives you the opportunity to understand how much family should be praised.
Without your parents, or even distant generations, commitment to the family farm and industry, it would be like like it is today.
I owe a great deal to my parents working all hours everyday to grow our family business.
The poultry industry is an industry I am proud to be part of and an industry I have no plans on leaving anytime soon.
It is currently going through some serious and hopefully positive changes.
Looking at the egg industry, Covid-19 has hopefully made supermarkets realise that without paying a fairer price to producers, there will be no British eggs available.
A price needs to be paid which not only covers the producers cost but also justifies reinvestment and crucially the farmers hours.
I feel this important point is often forgotten about.
I have been extremely lucky to be given the opportunity to conduct my placement with Moy Park – a Northern Ireland based poultry meat producer.
Having never worked with broilers before it is a pleasant change and I can honestly say I have really enjoyed my first few weeks, although I have to admit it is rather strange not having to work all the hours in the day.
In order to recruit agricultural students into the poultry industry to drive the sector forward, I feel more companies should offer placements to showcase our industry to the next generation.
