Meet #BobTheDog - Twitter's most-loved working collie

Every farmer loves their faithful dog - and none more so than Harper Adams student Georgina Gater-Moore.

Here begins the story of #BobTheDog...

Bob was gifted to me by my boss at the farm I have worked on in the run up to, and during, my time at university.

From what I’ve heard, many young shepherds are gifted their first dog, and I’ve read many a story of the fantastic dogs that taught the shepherds I admire just as much as their owners taught them.

I hope one day I will be able to tell stories of the legendary Bob the dog, my first proper working dog, and the adventures we’ve had. We’ve already had plenty, but I’m expecting many more.

The story behind the viral picture of Izzy the sheepdog The story behind the viral picture of Izzy the sheepdog

Bob was born during a busy lambing season. Him and his litter were a small accident, but lovely all the same, and there’s nothing like sitting in a pen of squirming pups during a quiet moment in the sheds.

I chose Bob almost immediately. Probably a risk as there was no way I could have known what sort of dog he’d be when he was merely hours old, but I kept my eye on him.

By the time lambing was over (for me anyway) I was heading back to university for my final term of second year.

I had chosen the dog with the spot on his head and the white tip on his ear.

We’re now a few months off Bob’s first birthday, and what a time it has been.

Of course, there have been moments when I have told him he’s being sent to Dogs Trust, but he’s such a character that I can never stay mad for long, and he knows it!

Bob is the most characterful, stubborn, loveable, vocal dog I have ever met, and I say that without a trace of bias. Putting him to sheep for the first time was one of the highlights of my entire year.

I couldn’t have asked any more of him, and to see him finally running full pelt, watching him work sheep the same way I watched his father, was a spectacular sight.

I’m excited to continue our training and hopefully learn and work together.

A big part of my life is social media, and so it was only right that Bob took his place in my online space.

Using the hashtag #bobthedog I have shared thousands of big and small moments from our story together so far, and looking through the hashtag - which almost exclusively features Bob!

It acts as a timeline of our time together, documenting his growth and his personality.

I’m looking forward to seeing what the future brings us; more miles walked, more river trips, more challenges and successes, including more sheep work and training for Bob.
