From the editor: Now is the time to campaign for British farming's future

Whichever way you voted last week, there is no doubt all farmers in this country are now united in wanting a fair deal for British agriculture.

However you feel about the outcome of the EU referendum, there is no point looking backwards.

Now is the time for action and for farmers, unions, lobby groups and industry leaders to ensure we have a British agricultural policy which is fit for purpose and allows farming to thrive, not just cling on to the edge of survival.

This is why Farmers Guardian is launching its ‘Shape Your Farming Future’ campaign which aims to give a voice to farmers right across the country and highlight what they want from a home-grown farming mandate.

Over the coming weeks and months we will, through the pages of Farmers Guardian and on fginsight.com, be asking farmers what legislation and support they want for their business.

And as the process of removal from the EU continues, we will put together our own farming policy document which details the real view of British farmers and their families.

Throughout this process we will, as we always have done, continue to hold politicians to account on promises they made in the run up to the referendum, such as maintaining farm support payments, ensuring access to global markets and achieving deregulation.

We know there is not a farmer anywhere who wants cash handouts, be these from the EU or UK governments, but as long as the supply chain and large retailers in this country continually fail to reward farms with a proper price for their produce, we will keep banging the drum for them to be supported in the right way.

This is one of the biggest moments British farming has ever faced and it is vital any future farm policy matches the needs of farm businesses, not the whims of bureaucrats and politicians.

And finally...

A lot of hard work has gone into the new look Farmers Guardian and we hope you enjoy the finished product.

We are also keen to get your feedback, so please email us at fgeditorial@farmersguardian.com with any suggestions you might have.
