England: Elaine Hill

With a single point advantage, John Atkinson and Wisk won the Ryedale nursery held at Egton.

Overall the Texel cross ewes were good to handle but they could be awkward at the lift and at the turn into the left-hand drive where, at times, they would face up to the dogs. Dan Purtill judged the entry of 31.

Ian Murdoch and Parksfarm Moss set the standard with a good run that scored 84 points. John and Wisk (J. Richardson’s Sal and Staff) ran at 22. Wisk ran out well and lifted his sheep without fault. He kept a good line up the fetch and had a tight turn into the drive.

After holding his sheep in the mouth of the pen for several moments he secured them to gain 85 points. John bought Wisk about six months ago from Derek Cheetham who had been using him for shepherding work. Wisk gained his first nursery title at Egton Show in August and then went on to win the nursery class at Kildale Show, early September.

At the two day Rainow Charity Hill Trial the dogs had three hills to negotiate over the 1,000-yard gather. Most dogs needed numerous commands to get them to their sheep. Once lifted the shearlings were brought down the diagonal fetch and taken over a short drive before the trial was concluded at the pen.

Over the two days £600 was raised for the Air Ambulance. On Saturday James Dumbleton and Sid were the clear winners, while on Sunday Anni Ritakallio was not only placed first with Cherry but also took second placing with Come-bye Jazz.

Cameron Dickson’s Straid Star got the measure of the challenging Blackface ewes at Sanquhar.

Star worked well outbye and walked them calmly round the course with only minor wavers on the fetch and drive and finished the winning run with a good chute and shed.

Well behaved gimmers at Kinross stayed together well, so were hard to separate at the shed, but a ruined dyke running across the course brought some dogs in on their outrun.

Murray McTeir gave Mak a whistle on his outrun to keep him clear of the dyke and he worked well from there. Trying to make a neat turn though the first drive gate, Mak put the sheep slightly below the line, but soon corrected that.

The pen was good, and although Mak was a little hesitant at the shed and needed encouragement to take his sheep off, he earned first place.
