Sam Hall, 21, works on his family’s mixed farm in Croxden, Uttoxeter. They milk 50 Friesian cross Holstein cows and have 150 ewes, with a further 50 which belong to Sam and his girlfriend. Sam runs his own egg selling enterprise on the side, with 1,500 laying birds.
Poultry: My plan this week was to make some straw, but the weather put that, and indeed the start of harvest, on hold.

Recently I was elected as chairman of Rural Youth Europe (RYE) which is a huge honour for me, having worked my way up through the Young Farmers movement in the last 14 years.
RYE is a non-governmental organisation which provides a platform for a network for rural young people throughout Europe. It is an umbrella for 20 rural youth organisations across 18 countries and represents more than 500,000 young people.

Tom Stable farms with his wife Anna and parents Mike and Denise in Ulverston, Cumbria. They milk the 250 strong Bolton Manor herd of pedigree Holsteins on 200ha (494 acres) and have just opened ’Cumbrian Cow’ Ice Cream.
Chris Waters works on the family dairy farm, milking 110 pedigree Holstein cows across 121.4 hectares (300 acres) of owned and rented land in Newport, Monmothshire.
As well as looking after the family’s herd, he also has his own personal herd of pedigree Holstein cattle under the prefix ChrisCross and a pedigree Simmental herd under the prefix GoldCross.
He also carries out seasonal work for a local contractor and is an active member of Bedwas Young Farmers Club.
Joe Towers markets the milk from his 350 cow family dairy farm at Hornby in Lancashire under the brands Lune Valley Dairy Farm and The Estate Dairy.
Rosie Hetherington is a new entrant to farming and runs a small flock of continental sheep in partnership with a retired farmer in West Yorkshire. She is also a third-year agriculture student at Newcastle University.
