Talking agronomy with Andrew Roy: A look at what lies ahead

03 August 2019 11:57

The run up to harvest is a nervous time for agronomists and growers alike, as we await the results of another year’s work.

As an agronomist myself, I often liken it to the feeling you get waiting for your exam results.

It can be risky to give predictions, even at this late stage but, it’s hard not to try and envisage what lies ahead as we plan work going forward.

Winter barley has filled well, with only a few blind sites and some late season ear disease taking the edge off what looks like a good crop.

The oilseed rape crop is, to put it frankly, all over the place; from some which look fantastic to others which appear downright mediocre. Lodging has been a real issue for us in the north and it could make harvesting a real challenge.
