Young Farmer Focus: Charlotte Garbutt – ‘A key requirement for farming is passion and, with it, determination’

Charlotte Garbutt, 24, from East Yorkshire, is an area manager for agrochemical company, Sygenta and is the current county vice chairwoman of Lincolnshire Young Farmers Club (YFC). She has also set up a pedigree Limousin herd on her smallholding in Billinghay, Lincolnshire.

Involvement: I am a farmer’s daughter from East Yorkshire and I now reside on the other side of the Humber Bridge. Since leaving Harper Adams University where I studied Agri-Business and completed a sabbatical year as Student Union president, I have been living and working in Lincolnshire as an area manager for agrochemical company, Sygenta.

I have also become very involved in the county, especially all things ‘YFC’ as I am both a member of North Holland YFC and currently the county vice chairwoman for Lincolnshire YFC.

Smallholding: My other half, Josh, and I purchased a smallholding of 5 hectares back in December 2018 and I have since done something I have always wanted to do which was to set up our own pedigree Limousin herd; Dalehead Limousins.

My brothers have stayed on the family farm and I did not get the opportunity to so I am proud of making a start with Josh and it is really exciting to be able to do it ourselves.

Opportunities: There are challenges involved – it is not a cheap hobby for starters! But farming is something I have always wanted to do and we will continue to grow our smallholding as opportunities arise.

A key requirement is definitely passion and, with it, determination. Farming can be very up or down but we have recently had a really positive experience. Our heifer calved and gave us our first Dalehead calf, she is a heifer too.

It is a very exciting time for us and we are looking forward to many more new arrivals.

For anyone who has not got the chance to take on a family farm, I would say there are lots of opportunities out there. You might not start out with a farm you can live off, but if you work hard and strive for your dreams, anything is possible. Just be prepared to be patient.
