Young farmer focus: Joe Bramall - 'Together we can get ag in the public's mind'

Joe Bramall, 20, is from a 162-hectare (400-acre) dairy farm, milking 240 cows, outside of Chester, Cheshire. He studies agri-business at Harper Adams university and is an NFU Student and Young Farmer Ambassador.

Being the only farmer’s son in my year at high school, I had no idea the scope and possibilities available in the British agriculture sector.

 

I am studying agri-business at Harper Adams, which has opened my eyes to the possibilities available in agriculture up and down the supply chain.

 

It also highlighted the disconnect between consumers and farmers and I passionately believe this needs to change.


NFU

 

Joining the NFU as a Student and Young Farmer Ambassador made clear to me the importance of politics in farming and how decisions made in Westminster can affect the industry, right down to the farm gate.

 

Seeing campaigns by the NFU and listening to people such as president Minette Batters and Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland county vice-chairman Joe Stanley has spurred my interest in agricultural politics, inspiring me to campaign on social media to get more people thinking about where their food comes from.

Ag Bill

 

We are currently facing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shape British farming with the new Agriculture Bill going through Parliament.

 

However, it is disappointing to see a lack of support from the Government on ensuring their manifesto promise, as Ministers seem to be putting quick and easy trade deals over sustainability of our country and supporting the constituents they represent.

 

I would like to see a fair playing field for farmers so the British public can keep consuming quality, sustainable British food that is in the interest of the whole of the nation.


Aspirations

 

We are going through a period of great change in farming and seeing competition like we have never seen before as an industry. Getting our message across to the public and to politicians is going to be crucial in the future.

 

Reminding people little and often about where their food comes from, and that it is not made in a packet on a supermarket shelf, is how we will engage more of the public.


Working together as an industry, we can get agriculture back to the front of the British public’s mind and I hope I can make a positive impact on our sector that will be remembered.

 

The NFU’s food standards petition reached one million signatures in June showing the support is there, so let’s keep this support going.
