Young farmer focus: Mhairi Strang - 'I enjoy meeting farmers from around the world'

Mhairi Strang, 26, is from Eaglesham, Glasgow. She graduated from the University of Glasgow with a business and management degree and milks 350 dairy cows, all year round calving, selling 150 stores each year.

SAYFC

Having been on a farm walk last weekend with young farmers, I cannot overstate how beneficial they are in opening your mind to other ways of farming that you will never have thought of.

As part of the SAYFC exchange programme, my family have housed more than a dozen international delegates, including Canada, Denmark and Norway, as well as welcoming vet students from the UK and as far afield as Singapore and Thailand.

Despite not being able to travel abroad during the last 18 months, I have found a different source for gaining an insight into international farming through YouTube vloggers.

It is great to see the seasons changing oversees and the different challenges and methods that they all use for tasks similar to ones that we do.

Work

Back at home on the dairy farm, the summer grazing season is not always fun and games.

However, this year (so far) we have hit the jackpot.

Our silage is in and our low yielding cows are still grazing day and night, while our high yielders are housed all year round.

Seeing the cows and youngstock doing so well during these long summer days is without a doubt a morale booster.

However, I would say that my calves are experiencing a blip in pneumonia in recent weeks due to the damp misty mornings that we have had.

I guess farming always presents us with a challenge to keep us on our toes.

Award

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate my young farmers club, East Kilbride, for being awarded the Queen’s Award for voluntary service.

During the last two years, we have changed tact from raising money for charities to putting a large focus on volunteering in our community.

Not only did the organisations that we helped gain from this experience, but we also enhanced the public perception of farmers.

It just shows you that something as simple as a Sunday morning litter pick can improve the image of our business to our customers.
