Operations Farm Manager

The candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Have an outgoing ’can do’ attitude together with high-level management ability. Have strong numerical and IT skills, passionate about animals, food and farming, proven experience in growing fresh produce and a hands-on approach to jobs on the farm.
A problem solver with the ability to make sound short and long-term business decisions, be self-motivated and good up to date knowledge about agriculture and agricultural machinery, be a leader and good team player.

Candidate Requirements - Knowledge and Experience:

  • At least 5 years previous farm management experience of large-scale production and several years practical arable farming knowledge
  • Knowledge of UK regulations of animal welfare; requirements for agricultural grants from the government; legal requirements in agriculture, farming industry and livestock in the UK
  • Knowledge of dairy production, dairy farm production processes, governmental requirements
  • Ensuring compliance of animal farm and cheese production with the government, industry standards, including health, hygiene, and sanitation standards. Ensuring that regular weekly testing of produce meets FSA and EHO requirements
  • Articulate in presenting a farm business proposal, making researchers, preparing quality reports
  • Must be able to act as an ambassador amongst the farming fraternity as required, maintaining the existing integrity of the business
  • Numerate, budget and IT literate
  • An excellent planner and organiser
  • Striving to achieve the ideal balance between the highest standards of husbandry and profitability
  • Good observational skills and a questioning nature, willing to challenge existing farm practices with supporting evidence, to observe a problem or potential opportunity, to think through the consequences and to offer suggestions
  • Health and Safety, Food Hygiene literate

Duties and Responsibilities will include:

  • Planning finances and production to maintain farm progress against budget parameters; setting budget and production targets; handling paperwork and keeping administrative records; ensuring that the farm is profitable and meets projected financial targets
  • Planning how the farm will run over the coming year; understanding the implications of the weather, making contingency plans and the year-round calendar
  • Creating business plans and preparing formal reports required by the Rural Payment Agency
  • Performing marketing and promotion of products of the estate, including social and online marketing
  • Liaising with new and existing customers providing ongoing product updates, support and coordination
  • Developing and maintaining a system of proper filing and keeping of documents
  • Performing Health and Safety compliance including H&S and Fire Risk assessments and management
  • Attending to cheese making and dairy plant specifically:
  • Ensuring that Standard Operating Procedures for all products are set up and documented
  • Ensuring that Food Safety Plan is set up and documented.
  • Manage of processing farm products: vegetables, milk, cheese and etc. Marketing the farm’s products; maintaining and monitoring the quality of yield, whether livestock or crops; making sure that products are ready for deadlines, such as auctions and markets requirements
  • Liaising with local authorities and other government bodies such as the Rural Payment Agency, animal registration, and welfare, obtaining necessary licenses and permits
  • Controlling compliance issues related to Standards and Procedures set up at the estate
  • Actively participate in any team meetings relating to the operation and produce information pertaining to the stock as required
  • Monitoring animal health and welfare, including liaising with vets; working with vets to monitor animals for infection and disease
  • Ensuring compliance of animal farm and cheese production with the government, industry standards, including health, hygiene, and sanitation standards. Ensuring that regular weekly testing of produce meets FSA and EHO requirements
  • Your working hours would vary depending on the time of year. At busy times you are likely to work long hours, with early morning, evening and weekend work
  • Managing contractors, liaising with suppliers
  • Maintain and update all requirements and documents associated with Farm Assurance on a weekly basis and expand Farm Assurance to other areas of farm eligible for assurance
  • Organising and overseeing all delivery and customer schedules on a daily basis
  • Organise and oversee all customer inquiry and complaints as needed
  • Recruiting, training/instructing and supervising farm workers; making sure that work progresses satisfactorily
  • Ensure all animal health treatments are used in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines, specifically adhering to the outlined dose rate, stock suitability and associated withholding periods Keeping an up-to-date knowledge of pests and diseases

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Operations Farm Manager must satisfy and comply with regulations set by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) for safe, high-quality produce farmed in an environmentally sustainable manner
  • Operations Farm Manager is required to have qualifications in agriculture, foundation degrees, land or estate management, farm business management or crop/plant and livestock production
  • Certificate in Work-based Agricultural Management or Business Management
  • Foundation Degree in Agriculture or Foundation Degrees in Agricultural Business Management, Animal Studies, Crop Production
  • BSc (Hons) Degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Business Management, Animal Studies, Crop Production
