A rare opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and experienced gardener to join a small friendly team on a private estate in Bavaria, Germany. The garden is currently being managed by an English Head Gardener couple, though the new employee must have a reasonable grasp of the spoken German language. The stunning privately-owned 12th century castle estate covers approximately 14 acres in Bavaria. The estate also owns a brewery, game shooting sites and a farm, though the new gardener will be based in the main estate gardens on a permanent basis. The property owners are not permanent residents of the estate, though they are very passionate about the gardens and like to be involved in the overall planning and decision-making when possible. The 12-15 acre garden is predominantly laid to lawn, with large wildflower areas currently being developed. The garden comprises areas of woodland, formal lawns, clipped hedges, pleached trees and topiary, a rose garden, herbaceous and mixed borders, ponds and streams, a swimming pool and a small greenhouse and nursery area. The ideal candidate will possess experience of each of the above, an academic horticultural qualification with good experience of hands-on gardening on private estates or large gardens. Training will be provided for passionate gardeners to improve their existing skill set and knowledge, though applicants must have good plant knowledge, be physically fit, and must be able to operate a range of garden machinery competently. Routine responsibilities will include general garden maintenance, pruning, planting, turfing, hedge cutting and general seasonal horticultural duties. The candidate must be willing to commit to the role on a long term basis, have a good comprehension of the German language and be able to converse confidently. The new Experienced Gardener should be able to take charge of the garden and Under Gardeners at times when the Head Gardener is absent. Candidates should possess a driving licence and ideally, have experience of driving tractors and trailers. Assistance will be required with non-gardening tasks at times. Working hours are typically 07:30 – 16:30 with a one hour lunch break. Expected seasonal variation to these hours will apply in relation to weather and daylight hours. Thank you for the interest you have shown in this vacancy. Unfortunately, due to the high volume of applications that we receive, it is not possible to respond to every one. Therefore, unless you hear from us within the next 14 days, your application will have been unsuccessful.
