Aphid threat to spring crops

Aphids continue to pose a threat with pea and bean and spring cereals growers alerted to risk situations this week.

The Processors and Growers Research Organisation (PGRO) is reporting relatively high numbers of aphids in peas and spring beans, with many crops still at early crop growth stages.

 

According to PGRO senior technical officer Becky Ward, both pea aphid and black bean aphid are present, and while both are virus vectors, the pea aphid is the primary vector for most viruses in both peas and beans.

 

She says: “Viruses are often transmitted into crops by low numbers of aphids prior to flowering. The risk for this may be high in 2016. It is therefore very likely that prompt action will be necessary to prevent virus transmission in both field beans and peas.”

 

Meanwhile aphid monitoring conducted by Rothamsted Research for AHDB shows numbers of all three cereal aphids are above normal for this early stage in the year. Spring barley growers are being alerted to a potential BYDV threat to backward crops.

 

Rothamsted Research aphid expert Mark Taylor says: “There is a potential BYDV threat to backward spring barley if conditions allow above average migrations to continue and crop inspection is highly recommended until crops reach GS31.”

Aphid control in peas and beans

  • The current recommendation, following re-registration of products containing pirimicarb, is for a single application only
  • New label pirimicarb products are restricted to a single application at maximum dose rate 280g/ha
  • For combining and vining peas only there are approvals for use of products containing the active ingredient thiacloprid for aphid control. Products approved are Biscaya, Pintail, Scabiya, Standon Zero Tolerance and Zubarone
  • Since pressure is likely to be high in 2016, a single application of any product may not be sufficient to control virus transmission and feeding damage. It may become necessary to apply a sequence of treatments of products approved in peas, either containing thiacloprid or pirimicarb
  • For field beans, the restriction for products containing pirimicarb applies,and pyrethroid products will give only partial control of aphids. There are products that are approved in organic systems that may give additional control
  • Thiacloprid is not approved for use in field beans
