1. Offer attractive working terms

 

  • Increasingly, candidates will choose a job which suits their lifestyle. This includes the financial benefits, but they will also be attracted to career development, good accommodation and sociable working hours.

2. Don’t sell yourself short

 

  • Farming may lag behind other sectors in recognising employers need to sell themselves as much as job seekers. What does your farm business offer which other farms do not?

3. Be flexible with the role

 

  • Engaging with suitable candidates can be incredibly effective. They may want additional responsibility or have an interest in developing skills which are outside of the original job description. Being flexible about the role can secure ambitious, enthusiastic candidates.

4. Be prepared to train

 

  • Research suggests there is a lack of formal training programmes for farmworkers. Individuals, regardless of their age, want to develop and learn new skills.

5. Think about your vision

 

  • Is your farm a progressive adopter of technology? Does it aspire to be a leader in its sector? Are you a smaller business which just wants to get on and do a good job? People want to feel proud of their job. Will they feel pride working for you?

6. Paying a fair salary

 

  • Many people will still move jobs to earn more money, but this is just one factor. It can be a clincher for candidates who are weighing up a number of options so it is still important to offer a good wage, but it is not the be all and end all.
