30 chickens in Lancashire backyard flock wiped out by bird flu

Around 30 chickens have been affected at the site near Thornton, Wyre in a small backyard flock.

Defra confirmed the case last night (Thursday May 4) and said those which have not already died will be later culled.

It came as bird flu previously battered a flock of 10,000 pheasants in Pilling, Wyre on January 24.

A 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone have been put in place to limit the risk of disease spreading and a full investigation is underway.

Defra chief vet Nigel Gibbens confirmed the lifting of the Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) will remain in place for May 15.

A Defra spokesman added: “We keep all disease control measures under review based on the latest scientific evidence and veterinary advice.”
