Worcestershire Young Farmers have raised money for two leading charities by running the equivalent of a marathon each ahead of this year’s AGM in Torquay.

Setting off at 7am from their county offices in Hawford on Wednesday, April 22, the 19 members ran a total of 160 miles to land at the Riviera Centre in Torquay just in time for registration on the Friday.

Their journey took 29 hours and involved members running four-mile rolling relays along the A38 – the equivalent of 12 miles each a day.

In the evenings the group were welcomed by Gloucester and Devon YFC. By the time they reached the seaside resort, each member had ran 26 miles and the equivalent to a marathon.

So far the club has raised £6,500 but are hopeful they will hit their £10,000 fundraising target.

The funds will be donated to Cancer Research and Worcester Neo Natal unit after several members have had experience with the hospital.

The fundraiser was the brainchild of county chairman Matt Tomkins who had previously cycled to the AGM in Blackpool three years ago.

Speaking to Farmers Guardian Matt says: “Our last task was cycling and we wanted a new challenge. We chose running and have all been practising since January so physically we were prepared.

“We were sore the day after and a lot of us had aching feet but we were so chuffed to have completed the task and hopefully we reach £10,000.”
