WHILE averages were down £33 on the year, prices flew to £60,000 for the pre-sale champion at Hawes’ two-day Swaledale fixture.
Sale leader came on the first day of selling, in the form of a shearling ram from S. and P. Brogden, Brough, which sold to Paul Hallam, Derbyshire, J. Nelson and Son, Clapham, with the Brodgens retaining a share.
At £55,000 was the second placed shearling ram from S.W. Porter, Muker, which went to J.G. Pears, Penistone.
P.E. and K.A. Sowerby, Barras, took £38,000 for a shearling ram. It sold to J. and F.J. Bland, Hawes, with the Sowerbys retaining a share, while A.M. Dixon, Barningham, sold a shearling for the same to R.S Harker and Son, Grayrigg, Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, and R.S. and B.A. Harker, Overthwaite.
M.R. Ewbank, Middlesmoor, sold one for £30,000 to J.W. Porter and Sons, Swaledale.
The day two champion was a shearling ram from W. Richardson and Son, Dufton, which was later knocked down for £25,000 to Messrs Lightfoot, Glenridding, A. Hartley, Seathwaite, Messrs Angus, Broughton-in-Furness, and Messrs Todd, Broughton-in-Furness.
Reserve champion on day one was A.D. Coates and Son, Muker, which later sold its prized shearling ram for £24,000 to J. and J.E. Bradley, Settle, and J.E. Cowperthwaite, Settle.
