Another Scottish sash for Jojo

Born in February 2014 and exhibited with its Ampertaine Jamboree-sired heifer calf at foot, Burnbank Jojo saw off 11 other section champions to take the supreme honours for breeders Douglas and Linda Graham, Blair Drummond.

Jojo is by Wildoge Fastrac and adds the win to its exceptional season tally, which includes inter-breed titles at Doune and Dunblane, Braco and Gargunnock. It was a class winner at the Royal Highland, where it was also part of the champion team and reserve champion pairs.

Reserve was champion prime heifer Lakeland Lady, a Limousin cross from Andrew Ewing, Annan. Shown by brother Chris, it was bought at Cockermouth spring sale for £3,000, where Andrew was judging and awarded the May 2016-born heifer the pre-sale championship.

Reserve commercial champion at Northumberland county, it is by Hollows Finn and will be aimed at competing at Agri Expo in October.

Over in the sheep pens, the Firm of Andrew M. Brown, Castle Douglas, was delighted to be chosen to take the champion of champions award with a three-shear ram. By a Mendick sire, it was bought as a lamb for 520gns at Carlisle for the Brown’s Drumhumphry Flock, and was bred by Robert Neil of Perthshire-based Rossiebank flock.

Judge Willie Thomson, Kelso, said the ram stood out from the other exhibits for its correctness and solid frame.

Mr Thomson said: “My champion was a very alert tup which really caught my eye. The accredited section also saw some quality competition, but the Texel I chose as reserve was sparkier.”

The mentioned Texel was a gimmer from Douganhill Farms, Castle Douglas, which was taking the breed championship for the 13th consecutive time. A daughter of the 11,000gns Sportsmans Tremendous, it is out of a Hull House Special Brew-sired ewe, and is a sister to a tup which sold for 16,000gns at Carlisle last September. The gimmer was only on its second outing, its first being Stewartry a few days previous, where it mirrored its reserve inter-breed victory.

A Holstein came to the fore in the dairy championship, taking the breed rosette for the third time in a row for Brian Yates and family, Castle Douglas. Logan Sid Eddie, a third calver by Pinetree Sid, has been classified EX 94 on two occasions and was a class winner at the National Show last term.

Giving 40kg daily with 4.93 per cent butter fat and 3.53 per cent protein, it took the Holstein honours above its herd mate Logan Gold Sun Pamela.

Slotting into reserve was the Firm of D.M. Lindsay with its Ayrshire second calver Willowfields Winny. Calved in July and giving 45kg daily, it is by Westmossgiel Modern Reality and was champion of champions at East Kilbride Show in July. The Lindsay’s own the cow in a half share with its Derbyshire-based breeder, Howard Batty, and it resides in their 60-strong pedigree herd at Lanark.

The same exhibitors also took reserve Ayrshire with cow Barr Sandy Rose 56, which is due in December with its eighth calf.
