The April 2017-born polled son of Heathbrow Grand Slam out of Heathbrow Sarah’s Elegance, was shown by Paul Walker, and gave breeders, David and Lesley Sapsed, Hitchen, their first championship at the show.

They also went on to take the junior inter-breed championship with their heifer, Heathbrow Jasmine which was also Simmental reserve female champion. The January 2018-born heifer is part of the Sapsed’s herd of 100 Simmentals and is by Scotland Hill Cairo and out of Hockenhull Claire, a cow bought from the Hockenhull dispersal sale about 10-years-ago.

Standing reserve was the Lincoln Red champion, Foulness Ultra, a January 2015-born son of St Fort Rolex. Bred by Chris Page, and now owned by Robert Mawer, Woodall Spa, it was breed champion at the show last year and this season has been inter-breed champion at Rutland, breed champion at Royal Norfolk and male champion at Lincolnshire Show.

The judge, Peter Donger, praising the quality of cattle in front of him said his champion was an excellent example of the breed, good on its legs with great character but not too extreme.

Of the reserve he said ‘you do not often see a Lincoln Red of this calibre but it is lovely over its plates, evenly fleshed and very correct.

The Great Yorkshire hosted the national Charolais show with the championship going to Bassett Nadia, an April 2017-born heifer by Harestone Domino, from Richard Hassle and Rachel Wylie, Banbury. Bought as a yearling from breeder, Jean Atkinson, Thorpe Bassett, and now in-calf to Westcarse Houdini, it was breed champion at Stirling Show and second at the Royal Highland.

It was also the Beef Shorthorn national show and taking the championship was Trowbridge Tessa Linsay, a September 2017-born heifer owned by Tom McMillan, Isle of Bute, and shown by Carol Rettie. By Tamhorn Glen, it was bought as a calf from the Trowbridge dispersal and was breed champion at the Royal Highland.

The British Blue champion was Top Side Isla, a six-year-old cow from R. and E. Pattinson, Brampton, and this was their first breed championship win at the Great Yorkshire Show. The cow which is part of the Pattinson’s 40-strong herd is by Strathearn Carvalho and was shown with its third calf Top Side Ourboy, a bull, at foot.

The Limousin champion was Foxhillfarm Naomi from M.J. Alford, Devon. By Trueman Jagger, the May 2017-born heifer which has been flushed to Ampertaine Foreman is out of homebred cow, Foxhillfarm Isla, one of the herd’s foundation cows. It was reserve inter-breed champion at the Royal Highland, and breed champion at Devon and Cornwall shows this season.

H. Blockley, Bradford, took the Longhorn championship at the Longhorn National Show, with Southfield Lace and eight-year-old cow by homebred bull Southfield Hawk. The cow and its bull calf which was its sixth calf, were part of the Blockley’s string of 12 animals at the show.

Taking the Commercial title was Queen of Hearts, a Limousin cross heifer from Jennifer Hyslop, Girvan. The May 2018-born heifer is by Waindale UFO and out of a Charolais cross cow by Carradale Neptune. Queen of Hearts was reserve champion at Beef Expo in May and was first in its class at Countryside Live and East of England Show last year.
