Despite the wet weather, the Balwen Sheep Society’s 30th anniversary show and open day attracted 73 entries across seven classes at Great House Farm, Llansoy, Monmouthshire.

Welsh television personality Meinir Howells took the supreme championship with her two-year-old ram.

From the Eifion flock of Shadog Farm, Llandysul, Carmarthenshire, the ram was also breed champion at the Royal Welsh Show and Spring Festival this year.

Judge Geraint Jones said: “I chose the champion as it has excellent conformation, while keeping the hardy mountain and Balwen type. It is a true reflection of the breed.”

There are 2,000 Balwen ewes spread over 168 registered flocks across the UK, although mainly concentrated in the Llandeilo area of West Wales.
