Later maturing, spring planted bean crops are often more susceptible to bean rust infection, and this may be the case for those crops sown during April and early May this year, according to PGRO.
Bean rust can be damaging in warm seasons when night-time temperature drops, and humidity is high. Infections before the completion of pod-fill can lead to significant yield loss as the crop defoliates, it says.
The fungus develops orange to red-brown spots on the leaf surface, and this becomes more prolific under suitable conditions, infecting both leaves and stems.
Pulse growers should also be on the look-out for powdery mildew infection which is encouraged by warm temperatures during the day, followed by cool, humid nights, warns PGRO. Late sown peas are said to be more susceptible to infection.
