Blue Texel shines at Aberystwyth and Ceredigion

A two-year-old Blue Texel tup shown by 13-year-old Rhys Williams topped a 570-strong sheep entry at Aberystwyth and Ceredigion County Show.

The home-bred Dragon Buster is part of a 14-ewe flock the youngster runs with parents Geraint and Kim at Llanwnnen and no stranger to showring success.

At last year’s Royal Welsh Show the ram was overall breed reserve and male champion, having also taken the reserve male rosette as a lamb the previous year.

Saturday’s judging also saw a shearling ewe from the family taking both the reserve breed and then the overall show reserve female placings.

For the female and reserve supreme championships Brecon-based inter-breed judge, Brian Davies, went for the best of the Poll Dorsets – a shearling ewe from the 24-ewe Roci flock of Geraint and Eleri Jones, Ystrad Meurig.

Runner-up for the supreme male award was a home-bred Suffolk lamb from Dafydd Jones, Llanon.

Best of the hill breeds was a Torwen Welsh Badgerfaced ram from the Griffiths family, Llanidloes, and the overall group of three rosette went to Tyngwndwn Texels from Lisa Reed and family, Llanon.

Two breeds staged Welsh national shows, with the inaugural Southdown championship going to a ram lamb from Dylan and Delyth Williams, Ciliau Aeron, while among the Beltex, a shearling ram from Rhys Francis, Abergorlech, topped the lines.

With no overall cattle championship the beef all-breeds judging panel was charged with finding the best male and female.

Heading the bulls was the home-bred, 17-month-old Simmental, Cwarre Jester 18, from Debbie Cumming, Hermon.

Beef - female winner

Female champion - Rhiwllech Orinoco from Mike and Sylvia Rowlands, Llanidloes.

Taking the female sash was Rhiwllech Orinoco, a 13-month-old Limousin from Mike and Sylvia Rowlands, Llanidloes, and better known for their commercial cattle successes.

The South Wales-bred heifer was bought for £2,700 at February’s Brecon potentials sale.

Beef Shorthorns from Irwel Evans and daughter, Esyllt Price, Llanilar, filled both reserve inter-breed slots, the three-year-old Willingham Katabolic among the bulls and 23-month-old Gordon Millicent 166 for the female award.

They completed a successful outing by adding the supreme pairs award ahead of a duo of commercial Limousin crosses from Dai Thomas, Llanwnnen.

In the dairy ring the inter-breed championship went the way of the home-bred Holstein, Elery Glory Corbie, a February third calver daughter of Walliswood Glory currently giving 63kg a day for Geraint Jenkins, Talybont.

For the second year running the reserve inter-breed rosette went to Severn Ivors Sweetpea, a seven-year-old Guernsey carrying her sixth calf for William Edwards, Llanon.
