British Blue's lead the way at Aberystwyth and Ceredigion Show

True to form it rained for Saturday’s Aberystwyth and Ceredigion County Show – but not until after the judging was over. Barry Alston reports.

British Blues led the way in the inter breed beef ring while Suffolks topped the bill in a non-stop seven hour judging marathon.

With no overall cattle championship on offer the eight-strong judging panel was instead charged with choosing the best male and female – and one herd provided both winners. Heading up the bulls was the 14-month- old Yorkshire-bred Lilley Knight, the recently acquired future stock bull for Wyn and Linda Morgan’s Ty Isaf British Blue herd at Adfa, near Newtown, Powys.

Their newcomer was the youngest bull at the Carlisle breed society sale and joins the couple’s 12-strong pedigree herd.

They also went home with the best female rosette, courtesy of their home bred heifer, Ty Isaf Iesha. There was, however, a change of colour for the judging panel’s best beef pair award.

That went to two home bred yearling Simmental bulls from Aled Davies’s Hirwaun herd at Ponthirwaun, Cardigan, one of them, the March 2015-born Gruffalo, having been runner-up for the individual male championship.

The reserve placed pair came from the Llandysul-based Glyncoed Limousin herd of Philip and Gemma Davies, who earlier had taken the reserve overall female title.

Dairy

In the dairy ring deciding the supreme championship was down to two farming auctioneers – Market Drayton’s Stuart Hassall and Carmarthen’s Huw Evans – with their verdict going the way of the leading Holstein.

She was the home bred two-year- old Waliswood Top Shot Blomke, just 90 days calved with her first for Paul, Bessie and Bryn Williams, Cwrt Newydd, Llandysul, who were competing at Aberystwyth for the first time.

Runner-up was the best of the coloured entries, the Guernsey second calver Severn Ivors Sweetpea, from William Edwards, who keeps around a dozen Guernseys alongside pedigree Jerseys at Bethania, Llanon.

Sheep

Choosing the overall sheep champion was no easy task for noted Charollais breeder, Lionel Organ. He, too, had to find the best male and female contenders, as well as a hill breeds champion and the best group of three from a 700-plus entry.

Leading his females was a home bred Blue Texel shearling from the brother and sister combination of 10-year- old Rhys and eight- year-old Nia Williams, Llanwnnen, Lampeter, on their first ever showring appearance.

A Texel shearling from the Reed family’s Tyngwndwn Texels, Cross Inn, was reserve. Topping the best male parade was a Suffolk shearling from Dafydd Jones, Llanon, with a three-year- old pedigree Welsh Mountain from Emyr Evans, Llangynhafal, Denbigh, next in line, having earlier taken the hill breeds championship.

The final reckoning saw the Suffolk tup edging the Blue Texel into reserve place and Dafydd Jones was back in the limelight with a trio of his Frongoy Suffolks ahead of a Blue Texel threesome from Dylan and Bethan Jones, Llanllwni, Pencader, for the group rosette.
