'What's in a pie...'

"That which we call a pie by any other name would taste as sweet."

- William Shakespeare (ish)

We kick started a debate on Monday - what defines a pie? Plenty of you on Twitter got involved with conflicting views of pies verses tarts.

In the end, we settled for this...

Did you know?

Did you know..?

The Guinness World Record for the most expensive meat pie ever sold goes to the Fence Gate Inn in Lancashire which sold its pie for £8195 - or £1024 a slice - to eight guests on November 14, 2005.

FG does #BritishPieWeek

Our resident food expert, Emily, has written a scrummy cheese and onion pie recipe on her blog!

Check it out here!

Pie facts

Did you know...?

  • Shakespeare has killed off two characters by baking them into a pie
  • Wigan, Lancashire, is home to the World Pie Eating Championship, which has been going since 1992

Our #PiePoll

Over 100 of you votes in our #PiePoll for what you would consider your favourite pie...

And the winner is...

  • Steak and kidney - with 45 per cent of the votes.

Best of the rest...

  • Chicken and leek - with 24 per cent
  • Meat and potato - with 22 per cent
  • Cheese and onion - with 9 per cent

Google did some searching...

Proper Wigan Pie

Our very own Wigan pie himself, Joel Durkin, made a fantastic pie in FG's Food Guru, back in 2014.

Are you serious...?

Last year, the 'Make wrongly describing a casserole with a pastry lid as a pie a criminal offence' petition earned 5,687 signatures arguing that a 'pie' with a puff pastry lid is not actually a pie, and is a casserole instead.

A pie-nal word...

Whatever your favourite pie may be, make sure you support British farmers by only buying British produce.

Look out for the British flag and taste the quality.
