Averages were significantly up on the year, as shearling ram trade levelled at £920 and ram lambs sold to average £941.

Top spot was clinched by a ram lamb from the Baillie family’s Calla flock, Carnwath. A son of last year’s Ballymena show breed champion, it is out of a ewe by a Glendamph-bred sire and sold to Stephen Duncan for the Achdregnie flock, Ballindalloch.

Shearling prices peaked at £11,000 for a ram from Mr Duncan, which is out of a 4,400gns ram. It sold in a three-way split to Co Donegal buyers Messrs Breslin, Ardara, Messrs Cannon, Carrick, and Messrs Mackey, Dunkineely.

The Achdregnie flock then took £10,500 from Matthew Hamilton, Woolfords, and the Breslin Family, Ardara, Co Donegal, for a home-bred son of a £5,000 ram, out of a ewe by a Glenhead sire.

Sandy and Steven Smith’s Haughton flock, Glenkindie, Alford, topped their run at £6,500, for their reserve champion, a shearling by an 8,500gns ram. It sold to the Calla flock, which sold a ram lamb for £3,000 to M. McAleer, Pomeroy, Dungannon.

The pre-sale championship went to a ram lamb by a Harkin-bred sire from Mr Hamilton, Cobbinshaw, West Lothian, which later went for £3,000 to D. Beaton, Memus, Forfar.

Making £4,500 was a shearling ram from the Dunruchan flock from Tom and Mairi Paterson, Crieff.

Son of a home-bred Craigneich tup, it went to judge Brendan Robinson, Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

AVERAGES

145 shearling rams, £920 (+£169); 44 ram lambs, £941 (+227).
