Sitting neatly between its two current transmission options, a 16 by 16 powershift and a CVT, Case IH has created a new powershift option for its venerable Maxxum tractor series.

Developed in-house, the new transmission comprises three ranges with eight powershifts in each.

Benefits of which are said to be greater gear overlap, smoother and faster shifting with little torque interruption and increased flexibility of use.

To differentiate the options, each has been given a new name; Active Drive 4 for the 16 by 16, Active Drive 8 for the 24 by 24 and CVX Drive for the CVT.

There will also be three spec levels available for the Maxxum which see the firm’s Multicontroller armrest used for the top two specs.

A 'fast steer' option is also available, reducing steering wheel input.

This is only available for Active Drive 8 and CVX Drive models, both of which can also be fitted with the firm’s AFS touch screen monitor.

At the heart of the new transmission is the use of double clutch technology, something which the firm has been using on its CVX machines to change range for many years. With one clutch looking after the odd numbered gears on one shaft and one clutch looking after the even numbered gears on another shaft, the clutches allow quick shifting of gears from one shaft to the other, says the manufacturer. Sounds familiar.

All three transmissions will eventually be available for all five Maxxum models (see table), with the largest model being the last to receive all the transmissions.

Active Drive 8 features:

On the road, the transmission can be fully automated.

  • Automatic road and field modes: In road mode a start-up gear can be programmed, with all gears and ranges changed automatically. In field mode, automatic changes are limited to within a range. You can also limit the number of gears changed in this mode.
  • Speed matching: This skips any overlapping gears when changing between ranges.
  • Kick down: Like an automatic car, when you give it the beans the transmission will drop a gear for maximum acceleration.
  • Brake to clutch: A handy feature for stop-start work whereby an integrated clutch within the brakes can be used instead of using the clutch pedal. It also incorporates an inching feature for more precise manoeuvring.
  • Shuttle memory: Different gears can be programmed for forwards and reverse.
