Claas appeals to contractors with new Axion 870 tractor model

Currently offering tractors from 200hp to 264hp in its Axion 800 series, Claas has extended this offering which sees a 295hp tractor added to the series.

By adding the 870 model, this fills a gap between its Axion 800 and 900 series, and also satisfies a need for an increasing trend towards high power to weight ratio tractors.

Alastair McCallum, Claas tractors and telehandlers product manager, says; “Before, if customers wanted a more powerful tractor than what the 800 series offered, they would have to step up to the 900 series. However, this is a heavier and larger tractor and does not suit all people.

“To address this, the new additional 800 model should offer people a more flexible tractor which is powerful enough for demanding pto and transport work, but without the physical restrictions of the larger 900 series tractor.

“In particular, we see it appealing to contractors using triple mowers, large square balers and muck spreaders, for example.”

Now topping out at 295hp, the new Axion 870 is 31hp more powerful than the current largest 800, the 850, despite having the same operational weight.

For all intents and purposes, the 870 is the same tractor as the 850, apart from being more powerful. This new found power is courtesy of engine power management which makes 295hp available when the tractor travels above 14kph and/or when the pto is engaged, providing 15hp extra on top of the 870’s rated 280hp.

Unlike the rest of the firm’s tractors which have full power available all the time, Claas has taken the power management approach to this model so it can still utilise the same ZF Terramatic continuously variable transmission (CVT) as used in the current 800s.

Mr McCallum says; “This allows us to make the most of the 800’s power without going beyond the limits of the transmission, allowing for high speed, low torque jobs.”

Unfortunately, this means the firm’s Hexashift, powershift transmission is not available on this tractor as it is not rated to a high enough power. However, Mr McCallum points out that in this power segment, there is a growing trend towards CVTs.

Power comes from a Stage 4 compliant, 6.7-litre FPT engine, which uses a stressed sump designed to Claas’ requirements, as an alternative to a chassis, which as well as coping with loads exerted on the tractor, also affords tight turning circles.

Like the entire Axion 800 series, the 870 will also be equipped with a new front axle as standard. It is up to 380kg lighter than the previous axle and allows an increase in the permissible gross vehicle weight.

Controlling all major tractor functions is the firm’s, mouse-style, Cebis control lever operating concept. In addition, the Cebis terminal allows the setup of all tractor functions, including a comprehensive headland management control.

Moreover, the 870 can optionally be equipped ex-factory with the manufacturer’s GPS Pilot steering system from, with its S10 or S7 touch screen terminal.

The new model will be available from 2016.
