The results from Yara’s Nutrient Benchmarking Scheme, which ran from 2017-2018 found that 83 per cent of grain samples were deficient in one or more of the key nutrients.
The scheme, which received over 250 samples from growers across the two seasons, also found 73 per cent were deficient in nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium, with phosphate deficiency being the most common.
Presenting the findings during the Crop Nutrition seminar, Natalie Wood, country agronomist for Yara said: “Most of the samples sent in were deficient in something. Surprisingly 38 per cent of samples had N deficiency and were below the 1.9 per cent guideline, and 59 per cent of cereals had P deficiency.”
She added that this is consistent with Yield Enhancement Network data, in which 50 per cent of samples had a P deficiency.
The next RB209 revision will include grain analysis as a recommended routine test.
Ms Wood added: “Grain analysis is a great way to look back at what has occurred in that season and what the crop has been able to take up. It’s a good indicator when also teamed with soil and tissue tests to start to change your strategy.”
