Datahub markets update: Strong trade across the auction marts

The market was strong across the board this week with beef prices mainly dominating the ring.

Heifer prices peaked at 199.01p/kg, up 3.67p/kg on the week, with young bull prices up 4.34p/kg to 177.32p/kg.

Cull cow prices also saw an increase of 2.76p/kg to 105.08p/kg.

Steers were however down 0.81p/kg to 186p/kg.

Old season lambs took a hit this week with prices down 4.69p/kg to 190.43p/kg, but cull ewes were up £1.78/head at £58.64/head.

Pig prices bounced back at 2.89p/kg up on the week, at 92.99p/kg.

Low fodder stocks and demand for feed quality barley straw have supported prices at UK hay and straw sales.

The Bank of England has kept interest rates on hold at 0.75 per cent as it forecast the slowest growth since 2009 for this year as Brexit uncertainty continues.

In currency markets, the pound was down against both the Euro and Dollar on last week. A pound was worth €1.14 against the Euro or $1.29 against the US dollar.

May 19 LIFFE wheat futures closed on Wednesday February 6 at £171.25/tonne, a drop of £0.50/t on the week.

The UK feed wheat market remained flat, despite extreme weather and export sales supporting global prices. Politics remained high on the agenda, but with no breakthrough traders were waiting on confirmation of what would happen with tariffs from April.
