A year on and a different judge, but Dinmore Glorious, the three-year-old Limousin first-calver, lived up to her name in Malvern’s keenly contested inter-breed beef championship line-up.

With the best of 14 breeds to choose from, Surrey’s Angus Stovold had little hesitation in repeating the show’s 2014 supreme individual top placing for Herefordshire-based Paul Dawes’ herd.

Herefords enjoyed a fantastic show too, winning three and finishing reserve in three of the four major inter-breed competitions.

First, the breed took the best native pair award, before competing with the Continentals to take the overall best pair championship with the team made up by 14-month-old bull, Nicholashayne 1 Kingkong, from Keith Prettejohn and Angela Kerslake, Wellington, Somerset, and Coley 1 Bonnie, from Heather Whittaker, Halifax, West Yorkshire.

Kingkong then went on to take the native inter-breed rosette and stood reserve to Glorious for the overall individual title.

Shropshire-based racehorse trainer Dave Roberts had a satisfying day on his return to the competitive sheep ring after a seven year absence, taking the top inter-breed-rosette with a home-bred two-year-old ewe from his 20-strong Charollais flock.

Next in line was a yearling Blue Texel ewe, from Giles Hardman, Gloucester, while leading the non-terminal breeds was a Zwartbles ewe from Allister John Thorburn, Homelee, with a Black Welsh Mountain yearling ram from Will and Sam Workman, Trecastle, Brecon, in reserve.

Sunday’s inter-breed pairs placings saw Lancashire-based John Stott awarding his supreme rosette to the Zwartbles, represented by a ewe from Mr Thorburn’s Holmlee flock at Annan and a shearling tup from breed newcomer Pam Parker and her Lochlad flock at Lockerbie.

A Texel tup from Oxfordshire’s D.I. Corfield and Partners teamed with a two shear ewe from Ian Andrews and the family’s Cattistock flock, Stroud, took the reserve rosette.

Malvern remains one of the few major shows to stage separate dual purpose breed championships, with this year’s supreme award going to the six-year-old home-bred Gloucester cow, Fenton Cinders, from Keith Burgess, Cambridge.

The two-year-old Red Poll bull, Appleton Claudius from Buckinghamshire-based M.V. Dawes, was reserve.

A disappointing dairy cattle turnout saw stock from Derek Mead, Weston-super-Mare, leading both the Holstein and Jersey sections, before taking the overall championship with his home-bred three-year-old Channel Island milker, Jerseygirls On Time Yeoman.

In contrast, an excellent 12-breed pig section with a 240 entry brought supreme victory for the Berkshires and Chris Impey’s home-bred two-year-old boar, Fairoaks Nama Abel 11, from Tonyrefail, South Wales.

Shepton Mallet’s Alice Newth also had a very fruitful day by taking the reserve overall with her British Saddleback boar, Prestcombe Golden Arrow 15, and together with her father, Julian, also figured among the top awards in the Large White and Landrace rings.

Zwartbles

The is the first time a Zwartbles has stood as interbreed champion at a royal show.
