Dolgellau Welsh Blacks top at 9,200gns

Bidding reached 9,200gns for an 18 month old bull in the Welsh Black Cattle Society’s 60th annual Dolgellau sale on Tuesday.

Although trade was described as selective in this Farmers Guardian sponsored fixture, very few bulls or females actually returned home unsold.

 

Taking the top price of the day was the August 2014 born bull from William Hefin Evans, Talybont, Gwynedd. Despite being unplaced in the show, Llechwedd Twm 33 caught the eye of John Lewis, of G.M., W.O. and J.J. Lewis, Llangwyryfon, Ceredigion. The bull was sired by Trefaes Twm 2 and out of Llechwedd Mona 39.

Second top price came for the youngest bull in the sale. From Ken Ellis, Bryncrug, Gwynedd, Ynysfor William 7 is October 2014 born and made 6,100gns to W.R.P. Jones and N.W. Jones, Bryncrug, Gwynedd.

H.W. Jones, Rhydymain, Gwynedd, took 5,300gns for Llwynsarn Cawr 8, born June 2014, and sold to G. Evans, Eithinfynydd, Talybont.

 

Next was Caerynwch Macsen, from T. W. Williams and Co, Brithdir, Gwynedd, that sold to J. A. Campbell, Reynoldston, West Glamorgan, for 4,100gns. Tecwyn Jones, Nebo, sold his reserve champion of the day for 3,900gns to B.F. Evans ar Mab, Talybont. This was Seisog Bedwyr 161, a June 2014 born bull sired by Seisog Cymro 83.

 

The male championship however went to Tryfil Sonny Bill from I. G. Roberts, Llanerchymedd, Anglesey. Sired by Ysguboriau Bleddyn 79, the May 2014 born bull sold to O.R. Pugh and Co, Llwyngwril, Gwynedd, at 3,000gns.

B.W. Thomas, Llanerchymedd, Anglesey, made 2,300gns for his June 2014 born Chwaen Erddyn 157 which sold to T.H. Davies, Llanbrynmair, Powys.

The bulls were judged by Dafydd R. Jones, Bryncrug, Tywyn, with junior judge Deio Clwyd Williams, Cwmtirmynach, Gwynedd.

 

Placing the females was Emyr Wyn Jones, Rhosygwalia, Bala with junior assistant Joseph Parry, Melin y Wig, Corwen.

The top rosette went to W.A.J. and S.E. Jones, Pwllheli, for Rhyd Shan, a 2012 born in- calf heifer that was one of the few unsold.

 

Champion maiden heifer came from Emyr Jones, Nebo. This was Graig Goch Memi, an October 2013 born heifer by Ysguboriau Brenin 75. It sold to Simpson Farms, The Hills, Hope Valley, for 1,750gns.

The top priced female however came from W.J. and M.A. Davies, Ponterwyd, Ceredigion. Their Coedllys Miranda 35 sold for 1,900gns to J. Pugh, Nantymoel, Bridgend.

Mrs Gwenfair Jones and Sons sold Hafodesgob Gwenan 29 at 1,820gns to S. and D.J. Williams, Pant Dwr, Powys, and sold another at 1,650gns to Simpson Farms.

 

The reserve champion maiden heifer made 1,700gns. This was Ysguboriau Dwynwen 150, a June 2014 born heifer, from William R. Pughe Jones which sold to D. R. Bowen, Molleston for 1,700gns.

 

Averages: 15 bulls 18 months and over £2,604; 5 bulls 12 –18 months £4,347. 3 females 2-3years £1,504.65; 8 1-2 years £1,691.55; 7 under 1year £835.80.
