Farmers need to ‘get off their backsides’ to help save #glyphosate

The petition, on popular campaign website 38 degrees, provides information about the safety of the chemical and warns people not to be ‘misled by cynical false knowledge and pseudoscience’.

It currently has almost 2,000 signatures.

Mr Sparling, who met nine MPs yesterday (February 28) to discuss the impact of losing glyphosate, said: “The petition is aimed at everybody. It is to educate people who are not involved in farming but who buy food.

“We need them to know without glyphosate the price of food will double, stocks will reduce and we will end up importing food which has been treated with glyphosate anyway, so there is no point to a ban.

“It is also for farmers to put their name to. We have to try and make people think they have some power. There is no point sitting on our hands and saying there is nothing we can do.

“It is quite annoying the apathy in agriculture at the moment. Farmers need to get off their backsides and start writing to their MPs about this, because politicians look at numbers, they look at the number of votes they will lose. This is going to happen unless we pull our finger out.”

The European Commission re-authorised glyphosate for 18-months, instead of the usual 15 years, in 2016. Its approval will be re-assessed at the end of this year.
