Farmers urged to check NVZ maps ahead of first appeal deadline

The first tranche of NVZ designation letters were sent earlier this month for the North West, Solway Tweed and Dee and Severn.

If farmers have checked the map and found they have not received notification, the NFU have urged they must contact the Environment Agency ’right away’.

NFU deputy president Minette Batters said: "NVZ designations are only reviewed every four years, so it is vitally important to check if you are in one.

"We are concerned that some designation notice letters may have got lost or sent to the wrong address."

The NFU added appeals to Defra can only be submitted if:

  • land does not drain into water identified as polluted
  • land drains into water that should not be identified as polluted

Second group

The second group of designation letters will cover Anglian, Thames, South East and South West.

The letter should arrive in the next few days.

Deadline: Monday February 20.

Third group

Letters for the third tranche, covering Northumbria and Humber regions will be sent around February 20.

Deadline: Monday March 20.
