Farmers warned to prepare for subsidies to be halved #brexit

Farmers need to make sure their business is prepared for subsidies to be potentially slashed in half after Brexit.

This was the message from farm business consultants Andersons at the Cereals event last week.

Partner Richard King called on farmers to stop using Brexit as an excuse and ask themselves whether their business would still be profitable if subsidies fell by 50 per cent.

He said: “What you should spend time thinking about is what you can do to make your business as resilient as possible.”

Andersons’ Sebastian Graff-Baker added farms could potentially become more profitable by doing less.
“There is clearly quite a significant element of many farms which is being done at a loss.

“There is an obvious choice of either improving land or taking it out of production in an environmental scheme or doing nothing on it.”

While he advised individual businesses should concentrate on their bottom line, not Brexit, Mr King said agriculture as a whole needed to approach negotiations with a more united voice.

Brexit deal

He said industry bodies needed to present the Government with a deal, not a begging bowl.

Mr King said: “This is not a message likely to get much of a positive result.

“The big job for industry is to make our voice heard. There are so many voices and we have not been good historically at talking as one.

“There is a multiplier effect beyond the farmgate and this is exactly the point we need to make. We need some very clear, sellable points to put to the public and to politicians.”
