The likes of Secretary of State Michael Gove, chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Animal Welfare Angela Smith and Neil Parish MP, chairman of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee, have already offered keen interest in backing the campaign.

Ms Smith said: “I am delighted to add my support to the Farmers Guardian’s ‘Backbone of Britain’ campaign.

“Our farmers do an unbelievable job feeding the nation and protecting our environment. However, for many, the future is uncertain with the industry facing many challenges as we approach Brexit and beyond.

“More than ever, our farmers need support and encouragement and, if we are to make a success of Brexit, it will start at the farm gates.”

Mr Parish added: “This is a great campaign from Farmers Guardian which I am delighted to back.

“The high quality food farmers grow and rear so we have enough to eat is a public good. They look after our countryside and make a huge contribution to our rural economy.

“Farmers truly are the backbone of Britain.”

The NFU, CLA and The Farming Community Network have also pledged their support alongside the Farmers Union of Wales (FUW).

FUW president Glyn Roberts said: “Farmers do so much more than just produce food. They are the cornerstone of our rural economies.

“Our farmers also make contributions to negating the causes and symptoms of climate change and, by providing employment and economic growth in rural areas, they mitigate rural depopulation, protect rural culture and heritage and keep the Welsh language alive.”
