Nearly 60,000 people attended last weekend’s 175th Dorset County Show, which also saw the BBC Songs of Praise team recording its harvest service. Tony McDougal reports from Dorchester.

There was a fourth inter-breed championship for Nick and Lisa Hill as their British Limousin fourth calver Quaish Evie won the beef title at the Dorset County Show.

It follows similar successes at the Gillingham and Shaftesbury, Mid Somerset and Dunster shows for the six-year-old cow, out of Quaish Abfab and by Wilodge Vantastic. The Hill’s run 35 pedigree Limousins at Nyland, Cheddar, and Quaish Evie will be going to Frome Show.

The reserve beef inter-breed went to Andrew and Beth White, Swanage, and their two-year-old Charolais heifer Balbithan Iona, which had taken the supreme championship in the breed society’s national show at the Livestock Event.

Inter-breed dairy champion, Lymatra Roxell Ann

Dairy

Champion dairy animal went to West Park Farm’s seventh calver Lymatra Roxell Ann, owned by Toby Wonnacott, Lytchett Matravers, Poole, which has produced an astonishing 85 tonnes of milk in her lifetime. West Park Farm has 230 dairy cattle, selling milk to Waitrose.

Reserve dairy inter-breed went to Josie Dowding’s three-year-old second calver Jersey, Lassies Grand Prix Flower, from the 22-head herd at Chilthorne Domer, Yeovil. Placed reserve supreme at both Melplash Show and Gillingham and Shaftesbury, the animal, which calved in May, is set to go to Frome Show.

Inter-breed sheep and Charollais champion from Carol and Terry Irwin

Sheep

Nearly 1,000 sheep were entered this year and the inter-breed championship went to Carol and Terry Irwin’s four-tooth home-bred Charollais ewe, from their Brandywells flock at Kings Nympton, Umberleigh. The ewe won the inter-breed championship at the North Devon Show and was reserve breed champion at Dorchester last year.

Reserve inter-breed sheep and Grayface Dartmoor champion from Christine Nugent

They pipped Christine Nugent’s two-year-old home-bred Greyface Darmoor ram, which is currently running with 20 ewes at Gillingham, Dorset. Christine, chairman of Dartmoor Sheep Breeders Association, said the ram would go to Frome Show.

Inter-breed sheep judge Derek Rashley, Queen’s Camel, Yeovil, said the Greyface Dartmoor was a strong, powerful ram and an outstanding example of the breed. But he and fellow sheep judge Jim Cresswell felt the Charollais ewe just had the edge to take the top accolade.

There was particular interest in the reserve Suffolk champion, owned by Paul and Sarah Eckett, Sturminster Newton, whose ewe lamb was chosen to feature in the BBC’s Songs of Praise harvest service recording, expected to be shown later this month.

Inter-breed pig and Berkshire champion, Choller Excelsa 4

Pigs

There was joy for Suzi Westron, Arundel, West Sussex, whose one-year-old Berkshire gilt Choller Excelsa 4, took the inter-breed pig championship. Suzi and Stuart Westron started breeding Berkshire and Large Black pigs eight years ago.

Reserve inter-breed went to Susan Lomas, Taunton, Somerset, with her three-year-old Saddleback sow Nancenoy Rosette 102, who was bought from Cornwall and had her most recent litter in July.
