Glyncoch flock takes Llandeilo Show's top sheep title for fifth time

For the second year running not a drop of rain fell on Carmarthenshire’s traditionally wet Llandeilo Show. Barry Alston reports.
Inter-breed sheep

THE judge was different, so was the ewe - but Llandeilo Show’s supreme sheep championship went to the same Charollais flock for the fifth time in six years, while the top cattle rosette went home with an up and coming 12-year-old exhibitor.

Both victories rounded off judging sessions which saw some quality packed livestock lines, a healthy attendance and a revitalised show layout and organisation.

Sheep ring supreme judging was in the hands of Stephen Sutherland, who had made the 1,300-mile round trip from Thurso, Caithness, to place the inter-breed contenders and yet again the individual honours went the way of the Manordeilo-based Glyncoch Charollais flock.

Topping the 500-plus, 21-breed entry was a home-bred Wrenvale Mad 4 Ewe-sired yearling from Adrian and Rhian Davies and sons, Tomos, Ifan and Harri.

Reserve sheep

She was a first place prizewinner and reserve female champion at last month’s Royal Welsh Show and Saturday’s success meant keeping a firm grip on the supreme title for a remarkable fifth time.

The family also narrowly missed out on retaining the group of three trophy they added to the collection last year.

This time around they had to be content with the reserve place behind a Beulah Speckled Face trio of home-bred entries from brothers Eifion and Hywel Jones, who keep 500 pure-bred ewes at Llansadwrn, Llanwrda.

Their day did not end there, either. A yearling ewe from the group went on to take the reserve overall individual championship.

Cattle

There was an equally commendable performance in the cattle judging rings – with the verdict of the five–strong beef and dairy breed judging panel backed by some considerable ringside appreciation.

Outright winner of the supreme championship was 12-year-old Anwen Thomas, rapidly following in the skilled showmanship footsteps of parents Elwyn and Cheryl Thomas and their noted black and white Gatrog herd at Pontantwn, Kidwelli.

She has the same prefix for her seven-strong Jersey herd and it was the four-year-old milker, Bluegrass Reagans Royal Sahara, that first of all took Llandeilo’s open dairy breeds championship and then the show’s overall cattle award.

Reserve cattle

Saturday was also a memorable day for Nev and Rhian Roberts who keep the Dulais black and white herd at Drefach, Llanelli.

It was their first competitive visit to the show and a first time outing for their second calver, ASRD Misha G Jordan, but they went home with both the Holstein championship and reserve supreme rosettes.

A home-bred fifth calver from Ken Marshall, Peniel, Carmarthen, was reserve Holstein leader and when teamed with another of his Ghost Story entries added the reserve pairs award as well.

Leading that championship line-up for the second year running were two Limousin cross commercials from Iwan and Meleri Hall, Llanedi, Pontardulais.

A home-bred first calf heifer, Carreg Martha, from Bernard and Margaret Llewellyn, Trapp, near Llandeilo, topped the open beef breed placings, with Dyfed Foxy Lady, a home bred maiden Simmental heifer from Meirion Jones, Llanfynydd, in the reserve spot.

Lleyn competition

Lleyn competition

A home-bred two-year-old ewe from Dai and Cynthia Morris, St Clears, Carmarthen, took the top award in Saturday’s South Wales Lleyn Sheepbreeders’ Club show staged within Llandeilo Show.

Runner-up was a ram lamb from Roger and Helen Wells, of Verwig, near Cardigan,.

Judging was in the hands of Richard Twose, Maenhir, Login, Whitland.
