The Government has published some practical guidance to help farmers prepare for a no-deal Brexit.
The guidance, which covers topics such as how to continue importing and exporting and what to do if you employ EU citizens, uses information set out in the ‘technical notices’ Ministers published last year.
Writing exclusively for Farmers Guardian, Farming Minister George Eustice said: “In the coming weeks I want to urge all farmers to familiarise themselves with the guidance and understand what a no-deal Brexit could mean for them.
“This week, we have published a central hub on GOV.UK to help the farming sector plan ahead and know what to expect.
“This guidance is being continually reviewed and updated with the latest information. Our objective in a no-deal scenario will be the try to stabilise the situation and, as far as we can, deliver short-term continuity.”
The new guidance has been published as the CLA urged farmers to spend time now preparing for a no-deal Brexit.
The group’s chief land use adviser, Susan Twining, has offered some tips in a new article for FG’s Brexit hub.
She said: “There are many moving parts and lots of dependencies, but businesses should plot out some potential scenarios to identify the critical issues both practically and financially.
“This could be about, for example, having enough feed or grazing if livestock cannot be sold.
“A no-deal Brexit would happen at a busy time for farmers, with crops still needing to be drilled and lambs being born, so spending time on contingency planning now, however imperfect, will help to minimise the disruption and any adverse impact on business.”
