NFU Scotland vice president Gary Mitchell has called on environmental charities such as the RSPB to do more to encourage their supporters to make responsible decisions about the food they buy.
His comments came after he spoke at an RSPB Scotland event at the Scottish National Party’s spring conference.
He said: “The RSPB is a big organisation with support from consumers who definitely need to be better educated about what British farmers actually do for the environment.
“Part of their role should be telling their supporters to be responsible purchasers of food. It does not matter what you put on the label, you cannot educate the consumer in 15 seconds as he takes a look at the product.
“As we do more things to help the protection of birds, that should be marketed to the consumer. It has very much got to be a team effort.”
James Reynolds, head of marketing and communications at RSPB Scotland, told Farmers Guardian the charity was keen to work with farmers and regularly published articles on food and farming in its Scotland News magazine, as well as in its blogs and monthly e-newsletter.
He also called on Scottish farmers to enter the Food and Farming category of the charity’s Nature of Scotland Awards, which celebrate ‘sustainable food champions’.
