This was Hackney Can Can, a home-bred Beltex shearling ewe which gave Christine and Paul Tippetts, Shifnal, Shropshire, their first inter-breed title at the show after winning the breed championship in 2013.

Shown by shepherd, Aled Groucott, assisted by Holly Jones, the champion is a daughter of stock ram, Kingledores Braveheart, the 2016 Royal Highland Show breed champion out of one of the Hackney flocks most prolific ewes.

Standing reserve was the shortwool/lowland supreme winner, a Clun Forest shearing ewe from Anna Pennell, Darlington, which had come through as the any other downland breed champion. Bought from breeder, Derek Knowles’ Wrotham flock privately last year, it remains unbeaten within the breed having taken five championships this year including at Royal Norfolk and Northumberland Country.

The judge, Gwyn Davies, Tregaron, Ceredigion, said both his champion and reserve were very correct sheep with great presence, but his champion had a very sweet head and tremendous back end with great length.

Reserve in the terminal breed championship was the Texel champion, a one-crop ewe from Proctors Farm, Wennington, and shown by flock manager, Jeff Aiken. By Duncryne Uber Cool, it was bought from breeder, Brian Henderson, Ballynahone, at the Northern Stars in-lamb sale last December and was a winner at the Royal Highland Show in June.

The lowland/shortwool reserve champion rosette went to the Lleyn champion, a home-bred shearling ram from Wynne Davies, who runs 300 pedigree ewes at Pwllheli, Gwynedd.

The longwool championship was taken by Tunstall Prince Harry, a Teeswater hogg in wool from Pamela Morrish and Adrian Helm, who keep seven breeding females plus followers at Great Ayton, North Yorkshire.

In reserve was the Lincoln Longwool champion, Risby Sweet Georgia, a yearling ewe in wool by Harby Townfield Sydeny. Home-bred by Louise and Ian Fairburn, Market Rasen, it was breed champion at Nottinghamshire Show.

A home-bred Hill Radnor yearling ewe claimed the hill supreme championship after being crowned any other pedigree hill or heath champion. Never having been out of the first three, every time shown, it is one of 150 pedigree ewes kept by Michael Thomas and Darren Bevan, Kington, Herefordshire, who were competing at the show for the first time.

The reserve spot went to the Rough Fell champion, a home-bred gimmer lamb from Brian and Jayne Knowles’ High Borrow Bridge flock, Kendal. It was making its show ring debut along with its mother which also took the reserve female championship.

Claiming the commercial female championship was the Half Bred Female cross Terminal sire champion, a home-bred Charollais cross Beltex shearling ewe from Chris Timm, Seaton Ross.
