Harvest 2019: RL barley yields ahead of five-year average

Harvest results from six AHDB Recommended Lists (RL) winter barley trials sites in Cambridgeshire, Hampshire, Glamorgan, Lincolnshire, North Yorkshire and the Scottish Borders continue to show above-average winter barley yields.

The average treated yield of control varieties (10.86 tonnes/hectare) is currently ahead of the 10.13 t/ha five-year average, while the average untreated yield is 7.84 t/ha, below the five-year average of 8.05 t/ha.

Yields are represented as a percentage of the control varieties - SY Venture, Craft, Bazooka, Funky and KWS Orwell. The average of the yields from these varieties is represented as 100 per cent.

Six-row

The six-row hybrid varieties SY Baracooda (109 per cent), SY Kingsbarn (109 per cent) and Sunningdale (105 per cent) are performing well.

The yields of the six-row conventional feed varieties are Funky (105 per cent) and KWS Astaire (106 per cent).

Average

AHDB reminds growers that the five-year average values provide a better representation of performance across seasons.

The six-row hybrids SY Baracooda (108 per cent), Belmont (108 per cent) and SY Kingsbarn (108 per cent) are performing well on yield, across harvest years 2015-2019.

The five-year yield performance of the six-row conventional feed varieties is KWS Astaire (105 per cent) and Funky (104 per cent), while for the two-row feeds, KWS Gimlet (104 per cent), LG Mountain (103 per cent), KWS Orwell (102 per cent) and LG Flynn (102 per cent) have produced the highest yields.

Candidates

Among the Recommended List 2020/21 candidate varieties, six-row hybrid varieties are achieving similar five-year average yields to recommended varieties, with SY Melbourne at 108% and SY Kingston at 107%.

The candidate two-row feed varieties KWS Hawking (105%), Jordan (103%) and KWS Patriot (103%) are performing well. The candidate two-row malting varieties Fay and Zophia both have a five-year average yield of 96%.
