Hat-trick of sheep inter-breed success for the Merediths at Burwarton

Ben Briggs reports from a bustling Burwarton Show which was runner up in this year’s Farmers Guardian Show Business 2015 competition.

Clive and Anne Meredith secured their third successive sheep inter-breed title in the sunshine at Burwarton Show, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, as their Suffolk yearling ewe took top honours.

Large crowds flocked to the popular show and it was the couple from Hoarwithy, Ross on Wye, who did the breed and inter-breed double once again for their 50-we flock. Bred by W.H. Sinnett and Son, Worcestershire, the ewe was fourth in class at the Royal Welsh and will now go back home to run with the tup.

Res

Standing reserve and reducing handler Sue Powell to tears of joy was a two-year-old Berrichon du Cher ewe. Out of a home-bred ewe and by a home-bred tup, it was part of the 55-ewe Tregwynt flock of Sue’s father Mick Williams, Three Ashes, Hereford. The ewe had previously been reserve at Brecon this season.

In well supported Kerry Hill lines, it was a family affair as John and Philippa Owens, Leominster, along with daughters Hannah and Ellie, took the champion and reserve rosettes with two yearling ewes. Their champion was a home-bred ewe by a Whitcastle tup from the 50-ewe flock.

Beef

In the beef lines there was little to choose between the top two animals as judge E. Jones, Lampeter, agonised over his decision for the inter-breed, finally opting for the January 2013-born Belgian Blue heifer Ty Isaf Iesha.

Owned by Wynne and Linda Morgan, Newtown, the home-bred animal had been champion at Shropshire Show and inter-breed at Oswestry this year. The couple run 15 pure-bred Blues alongside a commercial suckler herd.

Beef res

Narrowly missing out was Paul Dawes’ Dinmore herd and its November 2011-born Vantastic daughter, Dinmore Glorious.

Led by Richard Bartle with a stylish bull calf at foot, it secured the reserve breed title at the Royal Welsh and inter-breed titles at Cheshire and Three Counties for the 60-strong herd. Her final shows will be Anglesey and Monmouthshire.

Dairy

There was plenty of class on show in the dairy rings where a milky five-year-old Jersey caught the judge’s eye.

Bar-M Vindication Isla calved her fourth in May and was described by judge John Gough, Newport, as being a ‘great example of a dairy cow’ who was ‘really well balanced’.

Owned by David Birtles, Minsterley, it is part of a small show team of cows and this was only their second time at the show. Sired by Vindication, it was Jersey champion at Cheshire earlier in the year.

Dairy res

Standing reserve was third-calver Hawksmoor Regina from Robert Clare, Adderley, Staffordshire. Sired by Bolivia Alan, this was Regina’s first ever time out as Robert juggled which cows he used during a busy run of shows.
