The 2015 Hereford female of the year, Dendor 1 Jennefer 15, a four year old cow from Boomer Birch and Graham Brindley, Stafford was tapped out as supreme beef champion by judge Gail Lewis at a wet Burwarton Show.

Out of Dendor 1 Jennefer 8, it is by Solpoll 1 Gilbert and was bought privately as a calf three years ago from its Caersws-based breeders. It bred the record breed price, Skyhigh 1 Miss Valentine which sold for 8,500gns at six months of age in December 2016.

It was shown with January-born bull calf, Skyhigh 1 Pablo Escobar, which is sired by Normanton 1 Laertes, last year’s Royal Welsh, Royal Highland and Burwarton champion from the Livesey family, Leicestershire.

Reserve beef champion, Westhide Zoe, from Richard Bartle, Mary Cormack and Paul Dawes, Dinmore.

Coming in reserve was the Royal Welsh reserve inter-breed champion, the 2010-born Beef Shorthorn cow Westhide Zoe, jointly owned by Richard Bartle, Mary Cormack and Paul Dawes, Herefordshire, and bred by Martin Jones. It was shown with heifer calf Dinmore Zoe Leone at foot, by Meonhill Firefox.

Champion sheep, a Berrichon yearling, from David and Julie Gwynne, Talgarth.

Heading up the sheep in what is always a strong competition was a Berrichon yearling ewe from David and Julie Gwynne, Talgarth on their first Burwarton inter-breed championship. Having already taken reserve inter-breed titles at the Royal Bath and West and Royal Three Counties this year, the female is out of a home-bred ewe and by a sire which was privately bought from the Thomas family, Swansea as a ram lamb in 2011.

Reserve sheep, a Hill Radnor yearling ewe from Thomas and Bevan, New Radnor.

Just over the border from its county of origin, reserve was a Hill Radnor yearling ewe from Michael Thomas, Darren Bevan and Irene Hills, New Radnor, Radnorshire.

Out of a home-bred ewe, it was sired by ram Lynchwood Chester, bred by Tony Bird, Herefordshire. This year the yearling took the reserve Hill Radnor spot at the Royal Three Counties and any other breed reserve champion at Hanbury Show. Next stops for the showing trio are Tenbury and Pembrokeshire shows.

Inter-breed dairy champion, Hallon Talented Eda from Richard and James Tudor, Worfield, Bridgnorth.

In the dairy section, the star of the show was Hallon Talented Eda from Richard and James Tudor, Worfield, Bridgnorth led by David Madeley on what was the herd’s first ever showing outing.

The home-bred Holstein is giving over 50kg/day after calving with a heifer a month ago. Out of Boulet Charles, it is by Landino Park Talent and has given over 60tn in its lifetime.

Describing this inter-breed as the tightest he had ever judged, Stuart Hassall, auctioneer and valuer, said the cow as a ‘true representative of a modern dairy cow’ being ‘really balance and not overly big.’

After standing champion last year, it was the turn of Mawley Retinue Jenny Red from the Robinson family, Cleobury Mortimer to take reserve. Having had four calves, this home-bred red and white is now giving an impressive 74kg daily at 3.3 per cent protein and 4.2 per cent protein.

Pig champion went to the Tamworth sow, Stoneymoor Melody 58, from Bill and Shirley Howes, Kenilworth.

In the pigs, the supreme title went to the Tamworth sow, Stoneymoor Melody 58, from Bill and Shirley Howes, Kenilworth. Home-bred, it is due to farrow in three-and-a-half weeks.
