High of £60,000 for Swaledale rams at Kirkby Stephen

 

THE three days of Swaledale Sheep Breeders Association ‘C’ District ram sales at Kirkby Stephen topped at £60,000 for Mark Nelson from the Bull and Cave flock, Clapham.

The pen leader was Bull and Cave King Kong, a shearling ram by £60,000 Helbeck Unique, which sold to Graham and Emma Pears, Flash Farms, Sheffield.


It was Mr Nelson who, in partnership with Paul and Sue Hallam, High Birkwith, paid the second top price of £35,000 for Oakbank General, a son of the £21,000 Michael Watson ram, from Patrick Sowerby, Barras.


Jim Capstick, Millom, sold Blackcombe Duke by a Harkerside ram, for £32,000 to the trio of John Richardson, Dufton, Richard Hutchinson, Redgate, and Craig Ridley, Haltcliffe.

A brace of rams made £26,000. The first was Grayrigg Hall JD9, a son of a £42,000 Stainton ram from Richard and Gail Harker, Kendal, which was knocked down to Stan and James Harker, Murton Hall, Appleby in Westmorland.


The other at £26,000 came from Richard Hargreaves, Meadow Bank, Bartley. By a £20,000 Bull and Cave ram, it sold in a four-way split to J. Tully, Eggleston, D.C. and K. Hutchinson, Bowes, E. and K. Bland, Gaisgill, and T.W. Hutchinson, Forrest in Teesdale.


At £25,000 was Brownber Ram a ram by Helbeck Unique from Thomas Brogden, Helbeck, Brough, which sold to Stephen and Christine Clarkson, Richmond, Graham Scarr, Garsdale, and Thomas Iveson, Hawes.

 

The pen from Robert Hutchinson, Valley Farm, Bowes, topped at £24,000 for a ram which sold to Tom and Phillip Hutton, Threlkels, and Messrs Lightfoot, Glenridding.

 

Averages – 619 shearling rams, £2,486.04 (+£530.73); aged rams, £1,048.59 (+434.44); ram lambs, £892.42 (+279.42).
