During a surprise visit to the Royal Welsh Show she pledged her backing saying: “The Government is committed to supporting the half a million people who work in agriculture and produce our world leading food and drink products which contribute over £100 billion to the UK economy.

“I commend our hard working farmers up and down the country. I want to see a vibrant farming industry producing quality food not only for the UK but also looking for opportunities further afield.”

Asked what level of farming support there would be beyond the guaranteed funding until 2022, she said the UK Government and devolved administrations would be able to put in place new systems of land management not shackled by the Common Agricultural Policy.

“Beyond 2022 we need to look at which systems and funding arrangements best suit the UK. I recognise that farming is a long-term business and consultations with the industry will make sure there is not a cliff-edge switchover.”

With 90 per cent of Welsh lamb exports going to countries within the EU, she also stressed the importance of being able to continue to trade within Europe as well as doing deals elsewhere.

What is 24 Hours in Farming all about?

24 Hours in Farming is the agricultural industry’s biggest online event with an audience reach of more than 112 million.

Each year, we encourage British farmers to take to social media for one day to post pictures, videos and text to show and explain the work they are doing that day.

The aim is to show consumers the vast extent of the effort and care which goes into producing the food they eat.
