“It has left me speechless” – Young farmer thanks farming community for support after Wright Marshall closure

Farmer Ben Paterson has said the generosity and support of the farming community has left him speechless with more than £14,000 donated to him through a GoFundMe page when he was left out of pocket after selling calves through Wright Marshall.

Mr Paterson had started rearing calves 12 months ago and sold his second batch at Beeston Castle market on June 6.

“We were on cloud nine on the day. Around the auction ring was buzzing, everyone was made up for me,” he said.

Mr Paterson was told he would receive the money via bank transfer but started to worry when it was not paid on the day it was due. The following day, they found out about the extent of the firm’s financial troubles.

Contact

He said they had no contact from the mart, besides from their auctioneer who had been made redundant. He faced an uncertain future, fearing he would never be able to recoup the money which had been tied up in the animals.

“Once I found out they had gone into administration, I made a rash decision. I said, I cannot go through this heartache again. It would have taken a long time to recoup the finances.”

But his mother put up a post on Facebook ‘venting’ her anger about the situation and they had been amazed by the support received. A Go Fund Me page had then been set up, with more than £14,000 now raised.

Donations

On top of the donations, a farmer he was to buy calves from had offered to sell some on a pay when you sell basis, as well as numerous messages of support.

“It is quite astounding, it has left me lost for words,” he said.

“It has really given me the boost to want to do it again. I did not expect it at all.”

He added it was amazing the way the community had pulled together.

“I was not expecting any of this. It has left me speechless, I cannot processing yet. We have been receiving all sorts of private messages showing support, it has helped me get through it.

“On the GoFundMe page a lot of people have remained anonymous. I would love to make a big thank you to everybody.”
