The yearling heifer, shown by Jennifer Hyslop, is by AI sire, Claragh Franco, a Willodge Vantastic son, out of homebred cow, Grahams Coffee and is full sister to the 40,000gns Grahams Lorenzo. Alongside the 283-strong Jersey dairy herd, the Graham family run 50 pedigree Limousin cows with followers. Niaomi will attend the Great Yorkshire show and the Royal Welsh show later in the season.

The reserve champion was Charolais bull, Harestone Jaquard, owned by R. and N. Barclay, Insch, Aberdeenshire. Shown by herdsman, Robert Marshall, the four-year-old bull, imported from France, was also part of the Charolais group that won the inter-breed team competition along with Harestone Matilda, from the same home, Battleford Lola owned by Blair Duffton and Gary Paterson, Aberdeenshire and reserve breed champion, Inverlochy Ingris from John Irvine and Son, Banffshire. This was Jaqard’s first and last U.K. show as it returns home to work as a stock bull, bringing new bloodlines to the Harestone herd.

Also pulled forward into the inter-breed shortlist from the line-up of 13 breed champions was Aberdeen-Angus champion, Crew Lady Jasmine, owned by Stephanie Dick, Stirling. The heifer was bought in the February bull sales in 2017 from Irish breeders Samantha Allen and Allen Shortt.

As well as being individual breed champion, it was also part of the winning native teams competition along with reserve female champion, Retties Ruisseau from R. and C. Rettie, Perth and Rulesmains Egbert owned by Andrew Hodge, Berwickshire. The two-year-old heifer which was senior champion at Stars of the Future, Stirling in 2017, was breed champion at two local shows already this year and will go on to compete at the Great Yorkshire show in July.

The fourth animal pulled into the inter-breed shortlist was Simmental champion, three-year-old bull, Blackford Galaxy 15, owned by Michael Barlow, Leyland. Bought privately at the Royal Highland show in 2017 from breeder, W.G. Macpherson, when it was male champion and reserve breed champion and caught the eye of Mr. Barlow. Galaxy will go on to compete at the Great Yorkshire show before going home to the 50-strong Simmental herd.

The commercial champion was Limousin cross heifer, Flo-Jo owned and bred by Dermot Small, County Down. Fresh from taking the commercial championship as well as reserve and junior inter-breed titles at Balmoral last month, the 11-month-old heifer is by the Limousin, Trueman Idol, out of a British Blue cross Charolais dam.

Winning the inter-breed pairs were the Limousins, consisting of male champion, Foxhillfarm Jasper owned by Messrs Jenkinson, Penrith and Burnbank Jojo, a four-year old cow from D. and L, Graham, Stirling.

Heading up the Highlands was Skye of Little Rannoch, which took the female champion title as well as breed championship. The homebred two-year-old heifer from Messrs McNaughton and Lawrie, Fife, was placed as reserve female champion at the national show at Perth in 2017 as well as senior female champion and reserve breed champion at Stars of the Future in Stirling in 2017.

Taking the breed championship for the Belted Galloways was homebred September 2015-born heifer, Clifton Absolutely Fabulous, from A.F. Bell, Dumfries. In-calf to home-bred stock bull, Jamie, the heifer by Clifton Hercules, was placed reserve breed champion at last year’s Great Yorkshire show and will return this year with hopes of bettering the result.
