Once again, the Royal Manx Show, held at Patrick on the west side of the Isle of Man, was blessed by perfect weather conditions.
The winner of the Manx-bred beef animal was a two-year-old Limousin cow, Mannin Ingrid, bred by Brian Leece and shown by Richard Crookall.
The cow, sired by Willodge Enzo, had previously won its class at the island’s Southern Agricultural Show, and went on to be crowned the Royal Manx Show’s supreme champion.
Speaking on Manx Radio after receiving the trophy, Mr Leece said he was overwhelmed by the victory and thanked his young stockman and handler Richard Crookall for his dedication and hard work. The cow will be retained in the herd for breeding.
Reserve champion was a three-year-old British Blue cow, Andreayas Heidi, shown with calf at foot and bred by Alan and Sandra Jones. Sired by Bringley Black Star, the cow will be retained in the herd of 25 British Blues at their farm at Croit-ny-bane Farm, Andreas.
The dairy champion was a four-year-old Holstein cow, Cairbre Bluesky Pat, from Neil Masson and Vicky Sloane-Masson. This was the first show for this particular animal, which will be retained in the herd.
Neil and Vicky, who farm at Ballacricket, Arbory, also bred the reserve champion, Calibre Voyage Pat, mother of the champion which won at the Royal Manx Show two years ago. She last calved four weeks ago and is producing 52 litres per day.
Jim Irving of Dalston, Cumbria, who judged the shortwool section along with P. Lewis, chose a two-shear Texel ewe, Orrisdale Dreamer, sired by Forkins Stevie G, which was inter-breed champion at the Royal Manx Show in 2014.
The ewe, owned by P.A. Kermode, was shown by Kirree Kermode, who runs the Orrisdale flock at Ballasalla.
Kirree said: “The ewe will be retained for breeding and a son from the ewe will be sold at Lanark.”
The longwool champion title was won by Jonathan and Elizabeth Quine, with a two-shear Bluefaced Leicester ram from the Clennell prefix. The ram is part of the Ballakilley flock in Bride and will be retained for breeding, joining the Quines’ 60 ewes.
The Blackface section was won by a ewe from Kate Creer of Park Llewellyn. The ewe, which will be retained in the 500-strong flock for breeding, is from Irish and Scottish bloodlines.
Will Cain from Glendown Farm, Port St Mary, took first prize in the Manx Loaghtan class with a ewe lamb which had taken third place at the Southern Show in July. Will has a small flock of Manx Loaghtans and will be retaining the ewe for breeding.
About 20,000 people are thought to have attended this year’s show over the two days.
