A man has been arrested after 1,600 pigs were found dead on a farm in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

Leeds City Council’s environmental health officers are investigating claims the animals starved to death.

West Yorkshire police were called to the farm in Harewood at 8.48pm on November 12.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Officers attending the premises in Harewood Avenue found a large number of dead pigs.

"A 52-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to animals and subsequently released on police bail pending further enquiries."

A Leeds city council spokesman said: "We can confirm we are carrying out an investigation into an animal welfare incident in the Harewood area.

"Our environmental health officers are working with the Animal and Plant Health Agency and the police, and as the investigation is ongoing we are unable to comment further at this time.”
